A Journey Into Deep Retreat: Lessons from the Woods

Finding Wonder in the Chardon Woods

On December 30th, 2023, I stepped into the woods of Chardon for an event called Deep Retreat. Held in a Metropark cabin, the evening began not with talking, but with a guided meditation walk. We were encouraged to look at the world with wonder—silently listening to the crunch of our footsteps and noticing the rough bark of the trees beneath our palms. It was a masterclass in staying mindful in the present.

Waking the Body

As the temperature dropped outside, the cabin's warmth welcomed us. On our yoga mats, we moved in ways that woke each part of our bodies—creating heat, space, and a unified connection. We ended in a peaceful "corpse pose" (Savasana), allowing that newfound energy to ground us back to the floor.

The Ceremony of Cacao

Then came the cacao. In its purest form, cacao is bitter—a deep, dark chocolate that opens the heart. As I held my warm cup, I whispered an intention: “I trust that it is safe to surrender. I do not need to tread in this vast ocean; I can float with peace.”

In that collective reflection, I heard a quiet internal voice—one that felt wiser than my own—ask: “I have led you here, haven’t I? I have kept you safe, haven’t I?” It was a profound moment of relief. Despite the challenges of the previous year, I was safe. I was at peace.

Releasing the Old, Calling the New

The energy shifted into a drum circle and ecstatic dance. No talking—just movement, clapping, and whistling. We were encouraged to "shake off" the weight of 2023. As I shook off the old, I began to call forth what I wanted for the year ahead: empowerment, peace, and abundance.

The Sound of Stillness

We closed the night with a sound bath by the fire. With my eyes closed, the instruments created a melody that felt dream-like. I had a vision of floating under the Milky Way, the stars above reflected in the water around me. It was a sense of "knowing" that everything would be okay. This same 'dream-like' visualization is a powerful tool utilized during the grounding phases of EMDR Therapy.

My Wish for You

As you navigate your own year, I wish for you to step into an open mind. May you find your own version of peace and abundance.
