From Trust to Surrender: Navigating the River of 2024
The Power of a Word
At the start of 2023, I attended a New Moon ceremony where I was encouraged to choose a "word of the year" rather than a resolution. The word that resonated deeply with me was Trust. I wanted to trust the universe—to believe that no matter what, everything would be okay. I made it my mantra during times of anxiety: “I trust that everything works out for my greater good.”
The "Stuck" Feeling
As the seasons changed, I realized that while I trusted the universe, I wasn't actually surrendering. I felt like I was flowing down a river and became wedged in a stagnant corner, unable to get back to the center. I was trying to "go with the flow," but I was still trying to steer the boat to avoid every low-hanging branch.
Defining Surrender
What does it actually mean to surrender to the flow? A friend shared a definition by Karin Hadadan that changed my perspective:
“Even if my eyes cannot discern a path, I choose to believe. I let go of my perceived needs, allowing the Universe to usher in what is truly meant for me in its own perfect time.”
This is where trust and surrender meet. It’s about letting the Universe know what you want (manifesting), and then sitting back to allow it to happen in its own way—not necessarily the way you planned.
The Ocean vs. The River
I realized I had been viewing my life as a narrow river where I had to fight the current. I had forgotten that all rivers lead to the ocean. When I faced obstacles, I wasn't "stuck"; I was simply being challenged. Once a challenge passes, we can return to a relaxed position, floating safely in the warm waters, guided by the current.
Today, my morning practice ends with this realization: “I trust that it is safe to surrender. I do not need to tread in this vast ocean; I can choose to float.”
